What Should I Get My Vegan Friends for Christmas? Vegan Cookbooks! Duh!

Read all the way to the bottom of this post where you can enter to win a copy.
I am giving away a copy of each of these books, so just follow the prompts in the widget to enter!

For many of us, the Holidays are no longer about presents, like they were when we were kids. As a grown up I really enjoy the opportunity to meet up with friends and family over a drink, or a meal, and really spend quality time together joyfully in the spirit of the season. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the holidays! The amount of decorations that adorn my 700 square foot home is ridiculous and Christmas music blares from my car stereo as well as my house all month long. It's just the buying of "stuff" for the sake of buying "stuff" that really gets to me.

Vegans Go Nuts! Barbecue Pecans

book cover
Vegans Go Nuts! Celine's and my new book is now available!
I am super excited to announce the arrival of our new book! Celine and I were at it again, together, to create an entire book full of recipes that bring our favorite ingredient (NUTS!) to the forefront. No longer are they relegated to a sprinkle on top of salads. Nope. Nuts take center stage in this book, with recipes for basics, like nut milks, butters, cheeses, and mayos to entrees like the slow-cooked barbecue pecans in the Texas Hold 'Ems (on page 100) that I am excited to share with you below!

Going Vegan (and sneak peak recipes for Red and White Quinoa Salad and Tropical Fruit Cobbler)

If you haven't heard already, my good friend Gerrie and I have written a new book.  It's more than a cookbook, its a book about, well,  Going Vegan.  Let me tell you a little bit more about it.

Preorder Going Vegan now!
I am super, super excited about this new book. Why? Because it is so much more than a cookbook. You see, I co-penned Going Vegan with an amazing friend and colleague, Gerrie Lynn Adams. Gerrie is "one of those" vegans. One who cooks without added sugar, oil, or salt. Since you know me, you know that is certainly not my way of cooking...or eating. But, Gerrie knows what she's talking about! As a food scientist and nutritionist, Gerrie has taught me so much about how one can cure what ails them through the food choices that they make. And I was honored to be able to teach Gerrie about some of the horrors of factory farming, animal rights, and the effects animal agriculture has on our environment. And that is exactly the point of this book.

Vegan MoFo 2013: Win a copy of all of my cookbooks!

So here we are.  Saying goodbye to another year of MoFo'ing.  Oh my goodness.  This has been a pretty epic MoFo for me, how about you?  I love MoFo, and while I am certainly sad to see it go away for another year, I am willing to admit, that a small break (just about a week) will be welcomed.

Vegan MoFo 2013: Sundays are for Staying Outside! Grills Gone Vegan Review and Giveaway

Grills Gone Vegan by Tamasin Noyes

Have I told you lately that I love this book?  Grills Gone Vegan is Tamasin Noyes , of Vegan Appetite and American Vegan Kitchen fame's second book.  (Most recently, she also co-wrote Whole Grain Vegan Baking (review coming next week!) and Vegan Sandwiches Save the Day with Celine Steen.)

This book tells the world, once and for all, that being vegan does not mean giving up BBQ!  This book is just so awesome.  It has the expected veggie burger and faux ribs recipes, but it also takes grilling for vegans to the next level.  With an entire section devoted to rubs, marinades and sauces (If you know me, you know I love me some good sauce!) that can be used on anything from tofu to broccoli.  ANd Tami was kind enough to share her amazing recipe for Tofu Italiano, see below.

There is a chapter in the beginning that gives tips on how to buy a grill and grilling techniques for every situation, even indoor grilling. (Tami understands that not everyone has a backyard to grill in, so her recipes are also easily adaptable for an indor grill or grill pan.)

I don't have a bad thing to say about this wonderful cookbook.  If I had to give one criticism, it would be that I would have liked to see more pictures.  The information, and of course the recipes, outlined in this well laid out book makes this the definitive guide to vegan grilling and should be on every vegans cookbook shelf.

The fine folks over at Book Publishing Co were kind enough to send me a copy to give away to one lucky reader, so please follow the instructions on the widget below to enter.

Tofu Italiano From Grills Gone Vegan by Tamasin Noyes

Tofu Italiano
White wine helps pack these tofu slices with umami. With its enticing blend of seasonings, this tofu is a terrific main dish as is, or try it in the Italian Tofu Sandwiches or Linguini Puttanesca with Tofu.

3 tablespoons dry white wine
1 tablespoon salt-free vegetable broth
1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
2 teaspoons olive oil
1 teaspoon nutritional yeast flakes
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning blend
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
Generous pinch ground pepper
1 pound extra-firm tofu, pressed, and cut into 8 slabs

Put the wine, broth, vinegar, oil, nutritional yeast, garlic powder, Italian seasoning blend, onion powder, red pepper flakes, and pepper in a 13 X 9- inch nonreactive pan and stir to combine. Add the tofu and turn to coat. Cover and refrigerate for one hour or up to 3 days, turning the tofu occasionally.

Preheat a grill, grill pan, or electric grill to medium-high heat.

Lightly oil the grill with canola oil. Put the tofu on the grill, reserving the marinade. Cook until marked, about 5 minutes, while occasionally basting with the marinade. Turn over and cook in the same fashion until the other side is marked, about 5 minutes. (If using an electric grill, keep it open and cook a few minutes longer if necessary.)

Here I go Again! (A Call for Testers)

Because I absolutely don't have enough on my plate already, I've done and started writing another book. Yeah, I know Fusion Food in the Vegan Kitchen hasn't even been released yet!  But, if I am not crazy busy, I get myself into trouble.

What is this new book?  Well, I am taking a step back, way back, and writing a book geared specifically towards non-vegans looking to take the plunge into a plant based way of life.  I have partnered up with, food scientist and nutrition expert Gerrie Lynn Adams (You guys are really going to love her!)  and the ever amazing and wonderful Celine Steen to take the photos.

The tentatively titled,  Going Vegan, will be a guidebook on how and why you should, well, go vegan!  With chapters on nutrition, animal rights, environmentalism, and, of course, mouthwatering recipes.

A few things about this book:
  • This book is geared towards non-vegans looking to make a switch to plant based diet and lifestyle
  • There will be more text than recipes
  • The recipes will be basic, easy to create, and tasty recipes that focus on vegetables.
  • There will be very little (if any) faux products used in these recipes (ie, no store bought fake cheese or fake meat) however there will be recipes for creating home made versions of these items.
Don't worry, testing won't be that hard!
We are looking for a few testers!  You do not need to be vegan to be a tester.  In fact, this is a perfect opportunity to get friends, family, or anyone you know who has been tinkering with idea of converting to veganism, involved to show them how easy and delicious vegan food can be!

How does the testing process work?  We will post a recipe.  You make the recipe, and post your feedback in the comments section. Be honest. If it is a fail, tell us so. If you don't like it, tell us. Maybe it just wasn't your thing, or maybe the actual recipe didn't work. Let us know either way. Everyone has different tastes, and we understand that.  We will review all of the feedback and make adjustments to the recipes as needed.  If you test at least 10 recipes, you will get your name in the book and a free copy of the book when it comes out.

If you, or anyone you know, is interested in testing, please email me at:
JONI AT JUSTTHEFOOD DOT COM.

We've got enough for now!  Thanks to everyone who contacted me.  I'll be in touch shortly...
