VeganMoFo and the great Grocery Experiment of 2007

Last year my cousin Leah and her boyfriend Tim did something amazing. They dubbed it "The Great Grocery Experiment" in which they vowed to only eat food they already had in their kitchen, and not to buy anything for an entire month!

Think about that. 30 days of eating only wht you already have. Most of us could do that, no problem. Go look in your pantry. There is enough rice, beans, pasta, quinoa, nuts, seeds, oatmeal and cereals in mine to last me until the end of the year! Not to mention the stuff in the freezer and fridge.

(Please ignore any cheese or mayo or ranch or diet pepsis or beers...those belong to my husband. Other than that, I think I have effectively pushed him and all of his animal products out of the kitchen!)

I am going to make an effort to only cook with what I have until the week of Thanksgiving. ( I have quite a feast to plan for that week, so I will surely need to shop for fresh produce at that time.) The challenge will be to make exciting dishes with things I already have, and not resort to rice and beans or simple pasta. From the looks of it, some soba noodles in a peanut sauce with frozen broccoli may just be the ticket for tonight's dinner. I will post everything I make, along with recipes and photos when possible.

I challenge you all to look into your kitchen's and do the same! Think of the money you will save!

Edited to add: I made my first meal, for lunch, with enough left over for dinner. I made Joanna's Spicy Almond Noodles from Yellow Rose Recipes . I subbed peanut butter for almond butter because I was still crving peanut sauce after being dissapointed at Mother's. This really is an excellent recipe! So today's food includes: Breakfast: Coffee, 3 cups with just a tad of soy vanilla creamer, Lunch, the above mentioned Spicy Almond Noodles and Dinner will also be those yummy noodles. I am also going to try to avoind any late night cookie binges too!

Joanna's Spiced Applesauce

This is really tasty. It's very grown-up for applesauce. It also tastes really good over Ice-Cream.

REMINDER: This is a test recipe from Joanna's Yellow Rose Recipes.

PLEASE BUY THIS BOOK WHEN IT COMES OUT!!!

Joanna's Twice-Fried Beer-Battered Seitan

I have been neglecting my duties as a good little recipe tester, so I vow to test more of Joanna's recipes before I leave for Portland.

Tonight I made Joanna's Twice-Fried Beer-Battered Seitan for dinner.

The beer batter is excellent! I am used to doing the dip and dredge method, so this was an awesome change. I made two batches, my cutlets were small, one dipped in the panko, and one not (per Dan's request) and I have to say that I almost liked it better without the panko. It has an almost "fish and chips" texture that Dan and I really liked, especially dipped in ketchup, and during dinner we kept thinking up different things to dip in it. So far, we think making corn dogs with that batter would be the shiz'nit. But why stop at that, we are also thinking, okra, pickles, tofu...

I took a few pictures, but I have to apologize for the crappy porn. Not my best work.
Nonetheless...excellent recipe!

Joanna's Tester Soft Oatmeal Cookies

ooh. these remind me of breakfast. this is exactly how my oatmeal tastes after i drench it in EB and brown sugar. me likes, me likes. this recipe is so easy, and doesn't make a giant mess in the kitchen. i was craving something, so i just made them. done. (i have baked with tofu before, and was really excited to see it in this recipe because i like the way it holds the dough together without it getting to liquidy.) i'm eating these for breakfast tomorrow.

Sloppy Joanna's

These were sooooo yummy! I made them for my sister and Kurt last night after their long drive down from Portland yesterday and they also gave them RAVING reviews. Kurt says, "The way I remember real sloppy joes is that they just tasted like spaghetti sauce and meat on a bun. These have much more ***waves hand in air*** depth." Sissy says, "OMIGOD these are AMAZING!" The recipe made enough for 4 VERY SLOPPY Joannas.

Joanna's "White Girl" Channa Masala

I only recently discovered Channa Masala at an Indian Restaraunt in the Tustin Marketplace that has an entire vegetarian menu. SOOO good. Then Joanna put up a recipe for her "White Girl" Low Fat Channa Masala, So I tried it out last night. OMIGOD! To think I could've been making this all along?

The directions were easy to follow and the flavor was very good. This dish is extremely satisfying and could easily be served to picky omnis since it doesn't have any "fake" foods in it. Or as my husband always asks, "Is there anything weird in there?" I didn't have any brown basmati rice, so I served it with a wild rice blend. So yummy.

Joanna's Tester Spicy Almond Noodles

Alright, I made this, and loved it! I kept thinking as I was making it...this is not going to be spicy enough, but sure enough, this dish has some KICK! I made it exactly as directed, and it was quick and simple. The only modification I made was that I chopped up my mushrooms instead of slicing them. I SUCK AT SLICING MUSHROOMS! I will definitely make this again and again and again.

Anyways...here's some pics:

Joanna's Tofu Scramble (Tester Recipe)

As a general rule, I don't eat breakfast. But this morning, I said to myself, "Why not?" So I made this, without any of the variations. It came out nice and yellow and full of flavor. I made it as written, but in the future I would probably crumble the tofu instead of cubing it. That way the flavor of the spices, and there are a lot of spices in here, go all the way through the tofu, not just on the outside. The nutritional Analysis gave this one an "A" and I would agree. You get a nice filling meal for very little calories!
